Fashionable, stylish, SLAY! We have all heard these words in relation to appearance, but what do they really mean? How important is this whole fashion thing, and how does one perfect it?

I can’t address fashion without first addressing the naked girl underneath the clothes.

Listen, I want you, yes YOU, to be so empowered that you can walk into ANY room, with your head high, and a sparkle in your eyes because your confidence comes from within. I don’t want you to just be well dressed. I want you to be magnetic.

“She’s magnetic because she is confident

Confident because she is her. Authentically.

She knows her creator, and she has discovered who she was created to be.”.

My Top 3 Most Important “Look Good Doing it” Tips are:

  1. Be Confident
  2. Be You
  3. Know your purpose, then use it to leave your mark on the universe!

Once you’ve mastered these things, the fashion part is much easier! Your new found confidence does wonders for your closet! You are now able to shop for things that you truly like, and that make you feel good, instead of chasing the latest trend, or styling yourself based on the expectations of outside influences.

I’m not fond of list of do’s and don’ts when it comes to fashion, because I believe that there are no rules. It’s not what you wear, but how you wear it!

I truly believe this! However, if you feel like you need a little help mastering your personal style, trust me, we have all been there. So I’ll share a few things that have worked for me.

Step 1: Declutter/Minimize

Get rid of all of your “one days”! Especially your “one day I’ll lose enough weight to fit this” items. These pieces are taking up negative space in your closet, and in your mind! When you are searching for something to wear, and you flip through “one day” after “one day” that you can’t fit yet, you are subconsciously sending a negative message to your brain that says you aren’t good enough. It sounds trivial, but that is a heavy message to give yourself every morning at the start of the day. Imagine the contrast when you get to flip through item after clothing item of pieces that make you feel beautiful! It makes a huge difference! Next get rid of everything that you haven’t worn in over 6 months (not season related). You pass over it for a reason, donate it to someone who might actually wear it. This is phase one of decluttering. Your closet should have a lot of freed up space after completing this phase.

In phase 2 I want you to have fun putting together outfits with what you have left. The only rule in this phase is that if you wore it, and at some point throughout the day didn’t feel confident, or pretty, or comfortable, that item doesn’t get to go back in your closet when you take it off at the end of the day. I only want you to keep things that you absolutely love. This sounds scary, but what this will do is ensure that you are happy with how you look every single day, and you won’t have to spend a lot of time thinking about it because every item in your closet is a winner!

Step 2: Shop with a Plan

Now that you have created space in your closet and in your mind, conceptualize the girl that you envision yourself to be. Where does she go every day? What does she do? How does she feel? How is she dressed? Jot the answer to these questions down and then, every time you shop, do it with her in mind. Literally picture the #goals version of yourself when you shop and if she wouldn’t wear it, don’t buy it!

Next, strategically write a list of items you currently need to complete your wardrobe. For example, currently on my shopping list is a good white t-shirt that I can dress up or down, and a white blouse that I can wear with slacks and pencil skirts. For me this would get a lot of wear because I have a ton of bright colored blazers and cardigans that a white t-shirt or blouse would partner well with.

Last, create a Pinterest board titled after your personal style, and pin looks that inspire you. This will help with visioning, and with making your shopping list of must-haves.

Step 3: Try New Things

Now is the time to stop dressing for others and start dressing for yourself! Say goodbye to the days when you wouldn’t wear things because someone or some magazine told you it wasn’t for your body type or skin tone!

Assignment: Go to your favorite store and try on at least 5-10 things that you wouldn’t usually pick up. Things that you like but you would typically tell yourself that it would look better on someone else. This is a great way to get to know your body for yourself. Take note of the colors that make you feel happy and the styles that make you feel most confident. I promise you will surprise yourself with this step!

That’s it for now, but before I go I want to tell you with a secret. You totally have what it takes to master your personal style all on your own! I like to call it, “Style Empowerment” and you my dear, are officially empowered! Trust your own taste, and be yourself. Only wear what makes you feel amazing!

“Boss” like a girl and look good doing it! You got this!
